Our guest artist for the August 29, 2019 concert at the Arvada Center is someone you know and love, Robert Johnson. Robert is an entertainer who is equally at home in every arena of performance. His voice can be heard on countless national commercials from United Artists Theaters, IBM and Toyota to Greyhound and Kentucky Fried Chicken. He’s also been Mr. Squirrel on the PBS Saturday Morning Series “The Big Green Rabbit.” Since making his home in Denver, Colorado Robert has been named Best Male Vocalist in the Denver Posts Readers Poll, Best Jazz Vocalist by the Colorado Black Artists Association, was honored as Colorado’s Best Male Singer by the News and Radio Media and Best Male Vocalist by the Colorado Songwriters Association. Currently Robert can be heard on his CD releases through his label Jakarta Records Ltd. Those recordings are Richard The Third, Black Prince Road and Home For The Holiday’s. His latest release, All Blue, takes one back to the days of the cool with arrangement twists on classics from the Great American Songbook, all done with that smooth baritone as only Robert can!
The Colorado Jazz Repertory Orchestra will present concerts at several locations for the 2017-18 season, beginning with Basie 2.0 at the Arvada Center on August 12 at 7:30pm. In September, the CJRO present Kenton Swings! at the PACE Center in Parker, followed by West Coast Jazz at the Arvada Center on October 7. Go to our Events page for the complete season!
From an admirer in Michigan:
"First class musicians on every part. They have chops to spare and amazing technique. Intonation is really superb.
All of your soloists are quite good but several really standout: Art Bouton on alto, Eric Erhardt on tenor, and Paul McKee on trombone.
Your vocalist is excellent. The arrangements are killers. So much talent in this band!”
And a jazz publication in the midwest:
COLORADO JAZZ REPERTORY ORCHESTRA/Invitation: From an idea to an institution in half a dozen short years, this region big band’s debut is an accomplished, high water mark kind of date that shows what happens when you corral the crème of the crop and let them play their hearts out in their own way. A totally right on date that is in the tradition without sounding dated, they breathe new life into the oldies pulling them from various sources and quadrants. They do more than hit the right notes in the right order and deliver the good vibes as well. Solid stuff that auspicious debuts are made from.
Robert Johnson's beautiful voice is a Denver institution. Who else would have "singslikebutter" as an email address? Here's a video of Robert with the Boulder Blues Quartet, but he'll be with the CJRO sextet. That's two better!
Come get funky with Phröntrange, and float away on the sounds of the CJRO Sextet with Robert Johnson.
When? February 17 at 7:30pm.
Where? At the PACE Center in Parker, CO in their intimate Schoolhouse Theater. Get tickets here!
Hey jazz fans, some exciting concerts are coming up!
Phröntrange is a great acoustic fusion ensemble, fronted by Steve Wiest on trombone, along with the CJRO rhythm section and me playing Electronic Wind Instrument (EWI). We will perform at the PACE Center Schoolhouse Theater on Feb. 17 at 7:30pm. Our vocalist for the evening is the smooth, and ever swinging swinging, Robert Johnson. We will perform selections from our debut CD, "The High Road," as well as the music of Chick Corea, Al Jarreau, and George Benson. Don't miss this great group! We can't believe the stars aligned so that we all are playing together on the same night.
Also I'll be performing tenor and soprano saxophone solos on the Duke Ellington composition "Three Black Kings" with the Parker Symphony on February 25 at 7:30pm. This is a wonderful work that will have the PSO swinging!
Our January 21, 2017 "Turn Up the Basie" concert at the Arvada Center is officially sold out! We're going to perform classic Count Basie tunes, with Eric Gunnison playing the part of the Count, and Heidi Schmidt singing songs like "Everyday I Have the Blues."
It seems appropriate that our first CJRO post is to celebrate the news that the business model of the CJRO works. At every regional arts center where we partner; PACE, Arvada, and the Rialto in Loveland, we are now averaging about 400 tickets sold. Our audiences have been enthusiastic and the band is having a blast.
Be sure to get your tickets soon for our March 3rd concert "The Music of Steely Dan and Radiohead" at the PACE Center in Parker, CO!
